Freewheelers MC Ireland was founded in Waterford City in 1979 with 12 original members of which there are 5 still active in the club. In 1979 Freewheelers MC were the first of the 1% clubs to build and ride customised Harley-Davidson motorcycles now considered the norm for 1% clubs worldwide.

Because of this love of customised bikes the club set up its first custom show The South East Custom and Classic in 1987 in Kilmeaden Co Waterford which went on to become one of Europes biggest and most successful custom shows in the 1990s and still runs to this day in Tramore Racecourse Co Waterford.

2009 represented 30 years of the Freewheelers MC at the forefront of the MC and custom scene in Ireland and the club has gained recognition and respect worldwide. Freewheelers MC has now got 4 chapters in Waterford- Kilkenny-Cork- Sligo and it is the clubs intention to set up new chapters all over the Republic of Ireland.
