Bikers ‘Rendezvous’ Here For Freewheelers Motorcycle Show
TWO thousand bikers from all over the country and the UK are expected to converge on Waterford this holiday weekend for the Freewheelers MC Motorcycle Rendezvous. The event gets underway at Clohernagh, Kilmacleague, Dunmore East, on Saturday morning as the participants prepare their custombuilt bikes for the prestigious international competition, which takes place the following afternoon. According to organiser, Lennie Byrne, competitors travelled from as far away as Germany for last year’s event and again this weekend he is expecting motorcycle enthusiasts from the Republic, Northern Ireland the UK and, possibly, mainland Europe at the two night camp. Well known international comedian, Tommy Tiernan will be taking up residence in the biker village on Saturday when he will be the subject of an RTE documentary on his life and career — which will, hopefully, be screened later this year. For the competitors, bike enthusiasts and the curious, the headline entertainment will be provided on Saturday night by Radio Clash from London and they will be supported by local bands, the Jam Tarts and Rain Days. “Topless barmaids” will also travel from Dublin to join the strippers in adding “spice” to the event.
Apart from the custom bike competition, Sunday is family day. According to Lennie Byrne, a full programme of entertainment has been organised to suit all ages. “For the children we have bouncy castles and slides — there will also be archery, a wet T-shirt competition and a Rodeo Bull to whet the appetite of the older and more adventurous,” he said.
The trade stands selling accessories for virtually all makes of motorcycles to belts, T-shirts, hats, and badges will also be worth checking out. One lucky visitor to the Motorcycle Rendezvous will also walk away with a brand new Triumph 350, valued at approximately €2,500. The motorcycle is the top prize in a raffle, which will take place to defray the running costs of the show. A weekend ticket to the event costs €17.50 and admission on Sunday is €3 for adults.
